Millions of tourists visit Heidelberg every year, and it’s easy to see why! Germany’s first university city combines a lively atmosphere with a charming sophistication and plenty of history. The pedestrianized ‘altstadt’ (old town) is a pleasure to explore. Here, amidst elegant town houses and traditional German market stalls, stands the ‘Heiliggeistkirche’, a beautifully crafted medieval church. From the spire you can enjoy a commanding view of the famous Old Bridge, the River Neckar and the verdant forests beyond.
Ride the funicular up Königstuhl hill to the spectacular Heidelberg Castle, which bears the scars of the Thirty Years War and later conflicts with France. If you have a taste for good German beer, the city is home to various breweries and many bars where you can sample local ales. With a German course in Heidelberg, you’ll soon develop the confidence to speak to locals in German, so you can ask them for their favorite places to go in this fantastic city!
